A great example of community radio

Whistler FM is the local radio station in Whistler BC.  It's a community radio station with a true indie music sound & very community focused.  They helped raise 60K for a young woman who is a server in Whistler who was nearly killed on the Sea 2 Sky (highway from Van to Whistler).

That is pretty remarkable.     How many O.T.A. stations can one receive conventionally (ie.alarm radio & car radio) in Whistler?   (not counting cable & satellite hookups)?

Re: A great example of community radio

On an alarm clock you'd only get Mountain FM & Whistler FM.  Mountain is Rogers I believe & a sort of AC kind of thing.  In the car you can get certain Vancouver stations.  Whistler FM is a unique style station which you'd call Triple A but with much more depth.

Not to diminish what they've accomplished BUT when you're the only game in town . . . get my drift?

Hwy 26 into Collingwood has terrible auto crashes every year, often involving ski patrol kids but if FM 95.7 the Peak tried to do that they'd have a difficult time attracting attention because they have a miniscule local audience.    They try but competition out of Toronto (all formats) is formidable

Re: A great example of community radio

They're not the only guy in town there is Mountain FM.  The other thing is the station's format is not mainstream.  It's a locally based true indie format which is much more left of centre than CFNY or 102.7 The Peak in Vancouver.  It's not a format that is going to appeal to the average person, even a person who likes indie music. It sounds more like Baba on CKUA (and that's saying something).

It's success...is because it IS Whistler.  It's immensely local enough that it cares about a woman who was just working class at a local resturant.

And as for the only game in town?  10,000 youngish people each with 50 Mb per second internet & a downtown mostly covered in wireless?

They should give the listen to CKWR to this guy.  Because god knows whoever has it now doesn't deserve it.
