Hi Mike,
In all honesty, I'm not sure of your point.
I'd like to comment in some way.

Mike,
When I read the words I wrote, I recognized what an old, angry white guy I've become...I shook my head, and then laughed at myself.
I recognize that the biz has changed, but I'd still expect my boss to be articulate.
And, GAWD, please never bring back the nuns!

There are a number of things about this that disgust me...

First, denying the truth. If your client is less than dependable, you drop them...I know a buck is a buck, and it's difficult to earn bucks in radio these days, but whatever happened to integrity and honesty in advertising?

Next, the memo (if accurate) looks like something composed by a reasonably articulate Grade 12 student.  If this is supposed to be a memo to staff, I don't think that "Hey everyone" is an appropriate opening. Other staffers will read that, and say, "Whatever!"

Then, the writer says, "I suggest we totally avoid talking about it...". How much longer will the Valley Girl lingo hangover continue???  That word "totally" just doesn't belong in this context. (As well as other grammatical errors.)

My final point is that this a typically poorly-written business memo, by someone trying their best.

Whoever hired  Sarah needs to be fired. Not promoted, because that person has kissed multiple asses. Fired. Out the door.

Sarah, I feel for you. Your communication skills (in a business that's all about communications) are best suited to working the check-out at your local Sobeys. There, "Hey" and "totally" are accepted.

To GOD HELP US...
I think it's unfair, and absurd to pick on John McCallum because of his speech pattern.
The newsreaders do what all other newsreaders do in 2015...They use the technology available to them. And, yup. Obama uses it, too.
So what if Brian Woods called bingo numbers? I've had a number of conversations with a local guy named Bill Inkol, who augmented a fine career with "Bowling For Dollars". His stories would leave you laughing for hours.
I have been in radio (because I'm too ugly for TV) for over 30 years. I have no idea if you've ever worked in radio or TV.
If you haven't been in the business, I can understand your foolery as an outsider.
If you've been on the inside, I can't understand why you'd want to crap in someone else's backyard.
None of us do that.

David has been a fixture for so many years... The guy has always been a class act. I guess that he'll always be remembered as the "farm reporter", and I don't think he'd be offended by that.

His name is synonymous with local TV here in K-W.

A great career!

A good chuckle at the obligatory Cancon.

Talk about a away to ruin radio...

If it's popular, and it plays, it's good. Otherwise, it should be resigned to Comunity Radio specialty shows.

Agreed. A great jingle package can really draw listeners, as long as the music fits.

Too many stations have gone with the same old tired liners/Id's for too long.

Big Al hosted a couple of shows on CKCO-TV back in the day...

From time to time, he had a lady that he called "Big Alice" co-host with him.

Can anyone provide any info about who she is/was?

And, before I get crucified for posting stuff reminiscent of a former board,  I don't have plans to dwell on it. I'm just curious.

I have a great deal of respect and admiration for Alan Cross. The guy knows his stuff like no one else. I get your point. The trivia market is tiny. These days, those into the Classic Rock sound are saying, "Play the song! Then, play another!"

To the point - I'm no expert on the insider part of the biz, but I'm guessing that most PDs are puppets. They are told what will/won't work by consultants and accountants.  Very few are given the freedom to be creative. The result? Radio that is homogenous, boring and stale.

As you point out, there are some outlets that get it.

Most don't.

Bell's fight should be with another numbnuts organization (THE CRTC).

Canadians want to see what they want to see. If a homegrown comes up with a great series, we'll all want to watch it. We don't want to pay to have crap that is shoved down our throats.

If this is the best argument that this exec can devise, Bell is in serious trouble.

It's an idiotic argument.

I understand that Larry Fine has some "mint condition" (not sure if that means streaked or clean) Oldies 1090 UNDERWEAR.

And, I believe that if no one bids on these items, they'll be relegated to a display case at the Waterloo Regional Museum.

Any woman who has ever smelled me on the morning after would know that I'm much better than cold limberger and broken crackers. And, I couldn't care less about first class travel. All I want is the "special seat" that allows a little more leg room. I've never seen a luxury condo, so I woulldn't miss it.

And, I promise not to box. (I'm too old and slow for the sport.)

I nominate myself for a Senate seat.

I promise to serve everyone well.

I mean that.

I agree, Mark. This is a remarkable career...The sound of the station changed over the years, but George survived the change. Most of it spent at #1 in the market.

But, it raises a good point. Will the shoe-filler (and those are big shoes) be able to assume the role as a co-host as productively?

The station will have to choose a successor very carefully.

I wish them the best. They are offering alternative programming that a fair-sized audience appreciates. I'm not into it personally, but it works, sells, and offers something different. Isn't that what these non-Top 40 licenses are supposed to be about?

Overall, CHCH does a great job. They cover news (especially LOCAL) really well. Strong team, very professional. They get it, IMHO. The rest of their day is just enough of a tease to attract an audience. They are Commmunity TV, and I don't think they are trying to fool anyone into thinking that they're anything else.

Fred does a good job of providing local stuff without the drama. It's accurate, and when he's not absolutely up to date, listeners call in to amend/correct him. That's good.

This is like comparing apples to oranges...

These days, I like what I hear on DAVE. (And, NO, I'm not typical of their demo.) Like the team.

And,  I also like The Grand in Fergus. It's a very solid show.

But, in terms of longevity and success, nobody can beat George at CHYM! He, and the station staff figured out this market long ago. Tough to beat.

Man, that's a career, and something to be admired! He has thrived through a couple of ages of cut/cut/cut, and he still has the magic to hold the top spot.

Grant was great on radio back in the day, but probably best known for his stint on "Canadian Bandstand". I know that the vets liked to mock his "rug" back then, but the guy did a fine job of hosting the TV show. Had some good bands. It was local, and a hoot for the high school kids...

He also did a great job in the ticket office at the AUD.

Have I shown my age yet?

I guess this is a complete hijack of the thread.

Fred Locking. Provides me with traffic reports Mon. - Thursday. His pipes are hard to monitor, because they're so low. He's the ultimate pro. A radio vet. Most of all, when you talk to him via the phone, he's a gentleman. Can't beat that.

I'm hoping that this idea is a publicity stunt, and not a PD's/Station manager's idea of a "winner". It's a stupid idea, and heads should roll.

It doesn't take listeners two minutes to decide if they can tolerate a song they dislike. If they don't hear the hook or catchy chorus in the first minute, they're gone. And if it's a song they like, they're pissed that it's been abbreviated.

On top of that, last time I checked, Canadian stuff has to be played in entirety to count...
(Please correct me if I'm wrong.)

Good luck with this idea. If I'm on the CRTC, I'm watching this very carefully and calling for an audit of the programming logs. With that amount of music/hour, that's a lot of required Cancon.
