Well, I guess that makes it official. It's now been 3 months since the last post was put up here. Maybe we should play the board The Last Post as it seems to be officially dead.

RIP Big Blue. It was fun while it lasted.

Today, Jan 21st, marks exactly two months since anyone has posted anything here. I hope this isn't evidence that the board is all but dead. If so, RIP.

That's interesting, but not that unusual. They used to have a weather guy who was based, if memory serves, in Pennsylvania and did all of his forecasts from there.

IIRC, Brian Hill was also in the U.S. when he was doing 680 forecasts. Technology makes it possible. For better or worse, it's the voice and the credentials that matter, not the where the person is.

The pretzel logic of some Trudeau supporters and the lengths they will go to explain this away is simply stunning. I actually heard a woman on CBC Radio's Cross Country Check-up on Sunday suggest that Trudeau used blackface solely to stimulate a conversation on race relations.

Yep, he was so smart that 18 years ago - before he was even in politics or Prime Minister of the country - he thought about something that would happen almost two decades later.

And that is the thought process of far too many Canadians. And that is why, despite all the hypocrisy and the agonizing double standard that's been on display during this whole affair, I fear he could well win again.

Unfortunately, this forum doesn't get a lot of action anymore. Not sure why.

I like SOWNY, but I also appreciate an alternative. As I recall, this forum's membership blew up fast when the second (or was it the third?) incarnation of SOWNY went down before Iain Grant revived it. I'm not sure why this one gets so little attention. I check in every now and then, but it's been very quiet for the most part for a long while.

I visit here at least once a day just to see if there's anything new. Unfortunately, there usually isn't. Such a shame. I like SOWNY, but it's nice to have an alternative.

Same thing happened on 680 News Sunday, when meteorologist Harold Hosein was telling listeners the forecast for "back to school and work" on Monday.

Monday, of course, was Family Day in Ontario and for most, there was no work and all the schools were closed.

I also notice that one of the shows Antenna TV has picked up (it's actually been on for a while) is "Good Morning World." It's a one season and done series that aired on CBS in 1967, starring Ronnie Schell and Joby Baker (although Billy De Wolfe as the mean boss was the real standout) and a rare sitcom set in a radio station. The stars played two morning men, although if memory serves only part of the story actually took place in the studio.

It wasn't a great show, but I mention it only because a) it's also on Antenna TV and b) it's one of the few comedies that centre on radio. WKRP and Frasier are the most obvious and there was a show called "Midnight Caller" with Gary Cole that ran for a few seasons on NBC. But other than that, I can't think of many radio-set shows on network television.

And that's too bad, considering the places I worked had enough characters to be a show in themselves. Still, it's interesting to see an early example of a program that dealt with a medium it otherwise generally ignores.

I can't answer question one, although my guess would be that if a local station is taking the CP Newscast it's because they're not doing one of their own, so there'd be nobody around to do an update. Why use nationally syndicated filler if someone is already there to read local news?

A few stations sometimes cut away before the sports sounder comes on, in order to air extra spots, which is why there's always that very brief pause before they hit the stinger.

But I can respond with some authority to your second query. About a year ago or more, CP changed the way it distributes its newscast, going from live on satellite to a much cheaper Internet delivered product. As a result, that requires a few minutes of uploading at the source and downloading at the stations. Which means the thing is pre-taped about 10 minutes or so before it actually airs.

So there's no way to give a score in any game because it might have changed since the thing was recorded. Better to obfuscate than to sound completely wrong. But it can backfire, such as if the Super Bowl ends in that 10 minute window and the newscaster is talking about the big game as though it's still going on.

I've also heard from a source I know at CP that they've thought about doing away with the sports minute entirely, but so far, it remains part of the package.

Kinda what I was getting at --- lets say I'm a talk-radio consumer. Why would I want to listen to another  right-wing ranter in another city? Complete with 6 or 8 minute stops sets?  Being Captain Obvious, I DON'T.  Why would I want to listen to another city's 'Best Music Mix' when the city I live in has a station that is also the 'Best Music Mix' and they are both full of shit?  Again, I DON'T.

Ah, but I at least want the option if that's my choice. And that's what's missing - real unlimited choice. While I understand the reasons behind geoblocking for TV shows (although I don't like it) for radio it's complete BS. There is simply no reason not to let other countries hear your output. It simply makes no sense and in the early days of streaming, it was never an issue. Big players like CBS have made it into one for reasons I can't fathom.

My problem with it is that it won't allow you to listen to U.S. stations, of which plenty are listed but few work. Like so many other things broadcast related, you get penalized for living in Canada. I can understand it in the case of an entity like Netflix, but if a Texas station is playing the latest Katy Perry single, there can't possibly be any rights issues.

And the Corus-Rogers-Shaw etc. thing isn't any better. That one at least doesn't list any other countries and the only choice you get are Canadian stations. Yeah, I want to use up data to hear more Can Con.

Big yawn to both of them.

This “specialist” title nonsense began at City TV back in the 80s.

They decided that each of their reporters would concentrate on a single issue. That’s how Laura DiBattista suddenly went from an everyday G.A. reporter to a “Health Specialist.” Forget the fact she knew next to nothing about the subject. It was the news director's decision that “if we call her a health specialist, eventually everyone will accept her as one.” And on it went. Cynthia Mulligan, with almost no experience, became an “Education Specialist.” Jojo Chintoh a “Crime Specialist,” and so on.

It was a completely made up title meaning nothing other than they regularly covered that beat. But it didn't impart them any special prescience. And that’s when all non-meteorologists became “weather specialists.” It beat actually having to hire a university trained weather person. It sounded good, was far cheaper and eventually the public stopped asking questions about their so-called “specialty.”

A lot has changed at City over the years, including the unfortunate takeover by why-don’t-we-fire-half-the-staff-every-two-years Rogers. (Ironically, City now actually does employ a few actual meteorologists, like Adam Stiles who really do know what they’re talking about.)  But this artifact has survived in many TV weather departments across the dial.

Beware the term “specialist.” It really means someone who does this every day but has no actual training and really doesn’t know all that much regarding what they’re talking about. Because in the end, it's ultimately cheaper than hiring someone who does.

The guy in charge of TBS, the originating network, strongly denies the report and says "it's business as usual" with Conan - for now. But if you read between the lines, well, just remember what I discovered in broadcasting. When upper management tells you the station you're at is absolutely, positively, indisputably not for sale, expect it to be in new hands in six months.

It's too soon for that. They have to wait until, say, December 23rd to destroy their livelihoods and their holidays. This IS Bell we're talking about after all.

We have to get the corporate name in there every single time or otherwise, what's the point?

I strongly object to the use of the word "Toronto." According to the city's own website, this is an aboriginal term meaning "where there are trees in the water" and I feel that it illegally appropriates the native culture and thus must be banned immediately from all future baseball broadcasts. Since we can't use "Jays" because of the above poster's sensitivities, we have to just call them "The Blue." However because of the pejorative use of the term "blue" to mean pornography, that won't do either.

So that leaves "The."

"The" are playing the Cleveland No Names in the ALDS.

There. That should satisfy just about everyone. Unless the team has a transgender player on it. In which case, it must be They or Xe.

It's getting too complicated. Let's just forget the series and watch something politically correct. When is Bill Maher's show on HBO?
