Jack FM - 10 years later

It's been about 10 years since Jack FM came on the air.  Excluding Toronto, the format has been successful elsewhere. Now I'm sure some smug Torontians will claim it's "redneck radio" ignoring it's success in Vancouver.  Vancouver is about as far from "redneck"as you can get & hey it ain't Calgary with a mayor named "Ford".

With classic rock & even active rock having a best before date on it, Jack FM style stations may well be the future of rock radio.  The other day I heard Def Leppard --> Glenn Morrison.  By most radio metrics that is a train wreck but is it?  A 30 or 40 something would have been around when Def Lep was at it's peak and they probably liked Glenn Morrison. It's radio for people who don't spend their day reading about music, but do like listening to it.

The Jack style radio may well outlive the active rock stuff & even classic rock.

Rogers have done a really good job of evolving the format -- they've used it to house all the gold their (or their competitiors) AC stations have dropped lately, while combining it with the best of recent pop. In a sense, as Canada's ACs have become more like HOT ACs, JACK is filling the AC void. It's an amazing combo for them in Calgary.
